Insightful Words from Mr. M
From Fantasy to Reality
When my family and I emigrated from the Philippines in 1985, we were hoping for a better opportunity in the United States than what we were experiencing in a country controlled by “dictator”. Through this drastic change, we were hoping for better career opportunities, better educational opportunities, and better opportunities to exercise our democratic rights as citizens in a free country. When we arrived in this country we experienced a major culture shock. All of the colorful books and magazines I read as a child in the Philippines about the Unites States were fantasies. We arrived during a dead January winter in St. Louis, Missouri. No warm beaches, no Hollywood Sign, no Mickey Mouse, no Michael Jackson, and no Madonna. After major adjustments, my family and I realized that the hope of a better lifestyle is not free in this country. We quickly realized that we would have to sacrifice and work for these better opportunities to be within our reach.
With opportunity I was given, I am now a proud husband, father, teacher, and a responsible citizen. But for the past eight years, our country’s approach was heading to the fantasies I experienced during my childhood. For example, when my wife and I were borrowing money for our first house, the bank assured us that we can afford a three hundred and fifty thousand dollar house. My wife and I realized that there is no way we could afford this mortgage payment in two teacher salaries. If we accepted the offer, we were going to live beyond our means. This is a fantasy. Another example is the broken program of “No Child Left Behind.” The concept is admirable, but the objective is fantasy. With all of the different obstacles my students are facing, with different intellectual capacities, with different economic status, with different family support, with a different ethnicity, race, and culture, not everyone will be academically proficient by 2014. We did not all start on the same starting line and some of us work harder and sacrifice more than other, so we will not all finish at the same time. The idea that we can all be proficient at the same time is a fantasy.
The Presidency of Barack Obama will change all of these fantasies to realities. During his victory speech, President Elect Obama stated that for our country to turn around we need “a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.” As I learned from my family’s success story better opportunities and change come about with many sacrifices. Therefore, I agree with Obama’s philosophy of hard work. I am hoping with more responsibility taken on behalf of the government and individual citizens, our economy will have the confidence and hope to recover.
Obama’s administration will also reform the broken program of “No Child Left Behind.” Obama would like an alternative way of measuring schools and the academic performance of students. He realizes that schools are only teaching students to beat the test and states are watering down education to meet NCLB’s standards. Obama proposes a well rounded quality education so our students can compete in a global 21st century. Obama hopes that they too will have endless opportunities to be productive members in a free, democratic society.
The most significant impact of electing Barack Obama as our 44th president is the concept of hope. It is the same hope I felt as I anticipated my family’s arrival to this country. With two wars and a financial crisis, I am confident that Obama will change the United States so that it will once again be revered as a land of endless opportunities, not a land of fantasies. I do realize that it will take time and sacrifices from all, but as Obama promises “we will get there.”
I am hoping with this historical election that my two year old son, NiƱo, will understand that he is fortunate to be born in this country. But not everything will be easy and free. With sacrifices and hard work, he too will have an opportunity to become President of United States, as a son of a Filipino immigrant.

A couple late post
The cell providers must have been a peak capacity yesterday because I received this morning a couple of text from Jan 19 at 8:39 p.m. from Emily N. and another text from Eric yesterday at 5:40 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. I didn't want to miss any of your text so here they are:
Emily N. texted:
Getting into DC was hectic, but it was a bunch of fun once we got there. (I think this text was from Emily N.) Mr. E and Ms R got pooped on. Now at the hotel, finally at the end of a long day. The beds are HEAVEN!
Eric texted:
We stopped at a McDonalds. It was 3 stories. Apparently can serve 1000 people in an hour. We got to eat as much as we wanted. Still on our way.
We are having a good time. We just ordered a pizza. It took 30 minutes because we don't know the area so we guessed every time we called. It was fun.

Greetings to everyone at this historic event! It is exciting for a former Cougar to watch the website, read the blogs, and appreciate the fantastic experience that you will remember and appreciate always. I am now retired and living in Arizona, but thinking of you on this amazing journey brings me back to Affton. I am thrilled that I can watch the inauguration at home, but still have my heart in Washington. -- Mrs. Williams

CNN is using a GEO picture showing the masses of people which were along the National Mall. If you go to CNN.com you can see the satelite pictures. The dots resembling ants are people. You'll notice they are gathered together in specific areas. That's where the jumbo trans were located.

Random thoughts
I'm sitting in the Writing Lab making sure that the material that the teachers who are presenting tonight at the Board of Ed meeting is ready to go. I can't get my mind off of the thought that an estimated 1.4 million people stood in awe while not only watching history but being part of history. 1.4 million strangers until someone said "hello". What a wonderful thought. Standing peacefully side by side no longer strangers. Rather sharing a moment of each others lives. It would be amazing if the world could live in this type of peace. If neighbor to neighbor could live in peace.
You have witnesses the making of history. Now, do you feel that much is expected of you?

It's freezing cold and we are standing here, just standing in the cold. Toes and fingers turning to ice. We could rivial the BlueMan Group. But excitment is only on the backburner ready to move front and center the moment things begin to move.
AND miraculously, Esselman has nothing of value to say at the moment.

It's so early. I think none of us are thinking so none of us are thinking so much of the historical significance or the fact that those beds were nice and soft .... sigh .... but I try and grasp the ceremony of ceremonies. We are about to witness we are the people you see on TV, who years later can say "I was there". Out of the entire US of A's population only a few in comparison are witnesses to this event. the epitome of what we as a country stand for. We are here today to witness the peoples elect entering into the office of highest title. By the people and, hopefully, for the people.

Why is Mrs. P Posting?
Hi to all who are reading the DC field trip student's blog. I thought some clarification might be helpful for all of you who might be wondering why Mrs. P is posting and not the students. My cell phone has been beeping all day. Students are texting me and I'm transferring their words to the blog. Cell just rang - Melissa R is on the phone. She's downloading video from the FLIP cameras - thanks Mother's Club and Mr. Spicer for the cameras. Next step is to download digital pictures. WOW! I hope Melissa isn't going to try and download 13+ cameras!!! I really think that's doubtful since the word is everyone is exhausted! Oh, just heard the first set of pictures have been uploaded.
Sounds to me as if everyone is having a great time - When Melissa and Mr. M went to the Senate to pick up inauguration tickets, Melissa saw some friends she worked with when she lived in DC and she also saw my former student who works in Senator Bond's office. Mr. M had to stand in line at the House for 2 hrs. to pick up tickets.
Tommorow is another early day, breakfast is at 4:30 a.m. and off to the inauguration at 5:00 a.m.

We've landed! It's all a little unreal, and it"ll probably stay that way.... (mt darb ears won't pop and it's driving me crazy!) Everyone warned us that it would be FREEZING and yet...it's really not that cold at all. In fact, I'm sweating...hopefully it'll stay this nice, on the otherhand, I may have packed to warm! Ah well, we are here, dead tired, but ready to go!
Before we left, standing in line for tickets, I came face to face with just how "historical" this trip was going to be. Already we were discussing the finer points of history...at 4:30 in the morning! Ah! Ha, buy hey, I'm glad I'll learn something and I am kind of looking forward to it. There's a lot to learn.

Well....
In a few short days we will be leaving on our trip to Washington D.C. to see the inauguration of President Elect Obama. Crazy stuff.
I don't know that anyone really knows what to expect, so we shall see how it all works out.
"Get ready to be COLD" is the common heard phrase proceeding our trip, but what will we have to bring back to those who sent us off?
Again; we shall see.
So long!

I don't know that anyone really knows what to expect, so we shall see how it all works out.
"Get ready to be COLD" is the common heard phrase proceeding our trip, but what will we have to bring back to those who sent us off?
Again; we shall see.
So long!

Hi there
I'm Emily and I'm new to this particular blog. I'm going to DC next week for the inaguration, so you'll be hearing a lot from me. Kay, thanks.
-Oh, by the way, I remind people of Alaska Young. If you can tell me who she is, or what she's from, I'll be your best friend forever. And no, smart-alec, she is NOT from Alaska. That's simply her name.

Welcome to Your Historical Adventure
This is YOUR blog for YOU to use to capture YOUR on time moments of YOUR historical field trip to President Elect Barak Obama's Inauguration in Washington, D.C. Your trip will begin on Monday, January 19, 2009 with your return on Wednesday, January 21, 2009. Oh, did I mention, you will be doing a few things before you return; the inauguration, the parade, maybe the Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, Reflection Pool, Viet Nam Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Library of Congress, the Senate, the House and the list goes on and on.
